For immediate release (Country Meadows – Moncton, NB): High temperatures and high winds did not phase the junior golfers today at the 2006 NB Junior/Juvenile Championship that is being held at Country Meadows Golf Club in Moncton, NB. Despite the extreme weather conditions, the field of 136 managed to finish their rounds without any delays.
Mathieu Gingras of Fox Creek fired a –1 (71) to lead after the first round of the 2006 NB Junior/Juvenile Championship. Gingras made four bogies on the front nine, but bounced back with five birdies on the back at holes 10, 15, 17, and 18. Junior competitor Gingras holds a two shot lead over first year juvenile competitor David Chubb from The Riverside Golf Club. Chubb made a birdie at the 14th to finish the day at +1(73).
On the ladies side Stephanie Chubb of Riverside finished round one with an 83 giving her the lead. Junior competitor Chubb finished her round with 1 birdie on number 18. 6 strokes back of Chubb is Juvenile competitor Megan Akkerman of Rockwood and Midget competitor Jennifer Armstrong of Riverside with an 18-hole total of 89.
Round 2 commences at 7 am on July 19th in a double crossover format with low scores going out last. The first two rounds of the championship will determine the Boys Atlantic Teams, along with the remaining 3 spots on the Midget Boys team (the Midget Champion, Neil Roberts, is automatically on this team). After the first two days of play, the field of boys will be cut to the top 60 and ties. On the third day of play, the Juvenile and Junior Champions (boys & girls) will be determined along with the Junior Girls Atlantic & Provincial team. The top 21 and ties for the boys will move on to the fourth and final day of play, which is the NB Junior Boys team trials, to determine the additional 3 team spots (the Junior Male champion automatically receives a berth on the team) along with the 5 quota spots.
The New Brunswick Golf Association, a not for profit organization founded in 1934, is the official governing body for amateur golf in New Brunswick. In January of 2006, the NBGA officially merged with the New Brunswick Ladies Golf Association (NBLGA), resulting in one united governing body for amateur golf in the province. Programs offered by the NBGA to its 15,000 members include: 18 provincial championships, rules of golf education, course rating and handicap services, junior golf development programs and member club marketing initiatives.
