For immediate release (Country Meadows – Moncton, NB): The junior golfers had a beautiful day for round 2 at the 2006 NB Junior/Juvenile Championship that is being held at Country Meadows Golf Club in Moncton, NB. A total of 130 players completed the second round of this provincial championship.

 

Corey Bourque of Westfield and Alain Plourde of Edmundston are tied for first with a two-day total of 148. Junior competitor Bourque carded 3 birdies, 12 pars, and 3 bogeys. Plourde, also in the junior division, carded 1 birdie, 15 pars, and 2 bogeys. 1 stroke behind and tied for third place are Juvenile Matt Layden (Petticodiac) and Junior Tom Keddy (Burro Hills) with two day totals of 149. Layden finished the day with an eagle on #9 from 125 yards for a 36-hole total of 74.

 

On the ladies side, Stephanie Chubb of Riverside held onto her lead with a score of 79 in round two for a two-day total of 162. Junior competitor Chubb finished her round with 12 pars on holes 1-8,11,12,14, & 15. 5 strokes back of Chubb is Juvenile competitor Megan Akkerman of Rockwood. Akkerman maintained her second place standing after the 2nd round by shooting an 84 for a two-day total of 173. Akkerman carded one birdie on hole # 17. Midget competitor Jennifer Whelan of Riverside jumped into third place after 36 holes with a total score of 183.

 

 

Round 3 commences at 7 am on July 20th in a single crossover format with low scores going out last. The first two rounds of the championship have determined the Boys Atlantic Teams (Juvenile/Junior), along with the remaining 3 spots on the Midget Boys team (the Midget Champion, Neil Roberts, is automatically on this team). After the first two days of play, the field of boys has been cut to the top 60 and ties. On Thursday, the Juvenile and Junior Champions (boys & girls) will be determined along with the Junior Girls Atlantic & Provincial team. The top 21 and ties for the boys will move on to the fourth and final day of play, which is the NB Junior Boys team trials, to determine the additional 3 team spots (the Junior Male champion automatically receives a berth on the team) along with the 5 quota spots.

 The New Brunswick Golf Association, a not for profit organization founded in 1934, is the official governing body for amateur golf in New Brunswick. In January of 2006, the NBGA officially merged with the New Brunswick Ladies Golf Association (NBLGA), resulting in one united governing body for amateur golf in the province. Programs offered by the NBGA to its 15,000 members include: 18 provincial championships, rules of golf education, course rating and handicap services, junior golf development programs and member club marketing initiatives.
