Roachs Need Playoff to Defend Molson NB Fourball

The Hampton Golf Club was this weekend’s home to the 2008 Molson Men’s Four Ball Championship where the team of Jason and Darren Roach defended their championship in dramatic fashion.

The first round co-leading pair of Neil Roberts and Peter McCarthy from the Westfield Golf and Country Club birdied the 18th hole to move to 9 under par and to force a playoff with the Roach brothers. The Roach brothers, who play out of the Riverside Country Club, birdied the first hole of the three hole playoff, which was good enough to retain the Championship.

Darren and Jason shot a solid 67 in their second round to follow up their first round 68. On the front nine holes, the Roach brothers jumped off to a quick start by going 4 under par with birdies on the first two holes and an eagle on the 6th hole. Their back nine was played at a conservative 1 under par, which was enough for a tie after the 36 holes of play. McCarthy and Roberts got off to a slower start by shooting one under par on the front nine. The pair finished strong with two birdies on the last 4 holes to force a playoff and extend the championship. With the win, Darren and Jason were awarded the Ralph Costello Shield for the lowest gross score for the second consecutive year.

In third place was the team of Bob Brown and Tony Mackinnon from the Fredericton Golf Club. The pair shot a final round 67 for an 8 under par total, one behind the champions. The duo of Greg Jones and Shawn Branch from Country Meadows Golf Club finished at 7 under par, only two shots behind the leaders.

The first day co-leading pair of Wade Hunter from Hampton Golf Club and Jason Fauvelle from Nova Scotia, fired a second round 71 to finish at 6 under par. Alongside Hunter and Fauvelle at 6 under par was the team of Brent Hatchard from Aroostook Valley Country Club and Greg O’Neill from Hampton Golf Club. The pair shot two solid rounds of 69 for a share of fifth spot.

In the net division, the team of Dave Biron and Scott Robart from Rockwood Park Golf Club ran away with the win as they shot a second round net score of 56, which led to a two-day net score total of 23 under par. The first round leaders, Ken Deveau and Rollie Bourgeois of the Hampton Golf Club, finished a respectable second place after a second round net score of 64 and a two day total of 18 under par. With the win, Biron and Robart were awarded the Dr. Doug Brewer Shield, which is awarded to the two-man team scoring the lowest net score at the championship.
