Hache Grabs Lead at 2008 Dundee Wealth Management NB Senior Championship

When round 2 began at the 2008 Dundee Wealth Management NB Senior Championship, there were 11 players either tied for the lead or within one shot of the lead. Eighteen holes later, there is little doubt who has the upper hand. Paul Hache of the host Gowan Brae Golf Club posted the low round of the tournament thus far, shooting 2 under par 70. This leaves Hache at +1 for the championship and 6 shots clear of the next closest competitors with 18 holes to play. Hache started slowly, with a bogey on the 1st hole but he came right back with a birdie on hole 2. After that it was 7 straight pars to finish the front at even par 36. On the back, Hache used birdies at 12 and 14 to get to 2 under par.

In 2nd place is 2007 NB Senior Team Member Gary Greene of the Covered Bridge Golf Club. Greene shot 75 on Thursday after opening the tournament with 76 on Wednesday. Greene sits at +7 heading into the 3rd round. Aurele Hache, who shared the opening round lead with his brother Paul and 3 others, sits alone in 3rd place after shooting 77 in Round 2. Hache sits at +8, only one shot back of Greene and 7 shots back of brother Paul.

Aroostook’s Herrick Hansen and Riverside’s Shane Hayward find themselves tied for 4th place at +9 after two rounds. Hansen shot 76 in round 2 while Hayward posted a 75. Two former champions, Doug MacAfee of Sussex and Marty Winslow of Kingswood share 6th place with Riverside’s John Brown. All three players sit at +10 with one round to play.

Riverside’s Grant Dickison followed up his opening round 81 with a 2nd round 80 to hold onto the lead in the Super Senior Division. Dickison sits at 161, three shots ahead of Hampton’s Larry Marsh. The 2006 Super Senior Champion, Marsh, fired 79 on Thursday, the lowest round among Super Seniors. The 2007 NB Super Senior Champion Bill Bishop of Riverside shot his 2nd consecutive 83 and sits at 166, 5 shots back of Dickison. In 4th place among Super Seniors is Riverside’s Tom Jarrett, who has a two day total of 170.

Doug MacAfee of Sussex is the Division 2 leader after posting a 2nd round 76. Coupled with his opening round 78, this leaves MacAfee at 154, one shot ahead of Covered Bridge’s Fred McCain, who sits at 155. Louis Boudreau of Pine Needles sits at 156 with 18 holes to play. Moncton’s Phil Mix was able to hold onto the Division 3 lead after 36 holes despite stumbling to a 90 after an opening round 76. Mix sits at 166, just one shot ahead of Jean Boulay of the Restigouche Golf Club and Ernie Rogers of the Gowan Brae Golf Club, who both sit at 167. The Division 4 lead belongs to Bob Murphy of Restigouche. Murphy shot 84 on Thursday and he now sits at 170 after 36 holes, good enough for a 5 shot lead in Division 4.

This year’s Senior champion along with the next 3 best finishers will qualify to play in the 2008 Canadian Men’s Senior Championships to be held at the Sault Ste. Marie Golf Club in Sault St. Marie, ON from September 8th-12th, 2008. In 2007, New Brunswick was represented by Guy MacKnight (Country Meadows), Herrick Hansen (Aroostook), Greg Blake (Fredericton) and Gary Greene (Covered Bridge). In total, 119 players are taking part in the 2008 Dundee Wealth Management NB Senior Championship.
