Big Crowd Tops Dundee Wealth Management NB Senior Championship
The first round of the 2008 Dundee Wealth Management NB Senior Championship was played under sunny skies at the Gowan Brae Golf Club and 75 proved to be a very popular number in round 1. In fact, five players fired opening round scores of 75 to share the lead after 18 holes of play.
Among the group of five are brothers Aurele and Paul Hache from the host Gowan Brae Golf Club. Aurele opened with even par 36 on the front nine and closed with 39 on the challenging back nine holes. For Paul, it was 2 over par 38 on the front and 37 on the back. Joining the Hacheys are Sonny Phillips of Fredericton, Rod MacDonald of the Hampton Golf Club and Marty Winslow of Kingswood. Phillips had nines of 38 and 37 while MacDonald opened with 39 but played the back in even par 36. Winslow, a 3-time NB Senior champion, was 38 on the front nine and 37 on the back.
The log jam at the top continued as 6 players find themselves in a tie for 6th place, only one shot back of the leaders at 76. The group at 76 includes John Brown of Hampton, who is playing in his 1st NB Senior Championship, Gary Greene of Covered Bridge, Jean LeBlanc of Maplewood, Dave Morison of the host Gowan Brae Club, Philip Mix of Country Meadows and Fred McCain of Country Meadows. Green was a member of the 2007 NB Senior team.
Gerry Duguay of the Restigouche Golf Club and Shayne Hayward of Riverside sit two shots back of the leaders at 77. 2007 NB Senior Champion Guy MacKnight of Country Meadows finds himself amongst a group of five players who fired opening round 78s. In all, 30 players in the field find themselves within 5 shots of the lead.
In Division 2, Sonny Phillips leads the way after his 75. The Division 3 leader is Phil Mix with his opening round of 76. Division 4 leader Floyd Guitard of the Restigouche Golf Club fired an opening round 82.
In the Super Senior Division Riverside’s Grant Dickison fired an opening round 81 to take a 2 shot lead over the reigning Super Senior Champion Bill Bishop of Riverside. Bishop opened with 83 on Wednesday. Riverside’s Tom Jarrett fired 84 in the first round while 2006 NB Super Senior Champion Larry Marsh opened with 85.
This year’s Senior champion along with the next 3 best finishers will qualify to play in the 2008 Canadian Men’s Senior Championships to be held at the Sault Ste. Marie Golf Club in Sault St. Marie, ON from September 8th-12th, 2008.
