Two teams shoot 65 to lead NB Senior Fourball Championship

Wednesday marked the first of two rounds of the 2008 NB Senior Fourball Championship, hosted by the Westfield Golf and Country Club. At the halfway point, the Country Meadows Golf Club team of Ralph Judson and Guy MacKnight are deadlocked in a tie with the Gowan Brae Golf Club duo of Gilles Masse and Paul Hachey.

Judson and MacKnight had a bogey-free round with birdies on 1, 8, 13, & 17, going 33 on the front and 32 on the back. The pair is also currently leading the net competition after shooting a 10 under par, 59 net score. MacKnight is no stranger to being at the top of the leaderboard as he won the 2007 NB Senior Championship at the Aroostook Valley Country Club. Facing MacKnight and Judson on Thursday in the final group will be the 2008 NB Senior Champion, Paul Hachey and the 2008 runner-up Gilles Masse. Not only did Hachey and Masse finish 1st and 2nd at this year’s NB Senior Championship, they are also the defending champions at this event, claiming victory in Grand Falls last year.

Hachey and Masse were also 4 under par on Wednesday with 5 birdies on holes 5, 9, 11, 13, & 14, although they had a bogey on the 15th hole to finish their round. Like their counterparts, they also went 33 on the front and 32 on the back nine. These two pairs are bound to provide some excitement and low scores in the final round on Thursday.

Not far behind the leaders are the teams of Neil Girdwood of the Covered Bridge Golf Club and Doug Atherton of the Woodstock Golf Club, and also the team of John Brown of the Riverside Country Club and Pierre Boulet of the Hampton Golf Club. Both of these teams fired 67 on Wednesday and will be playing together in the second last pairing. Shooting solid rounds of 68 and in a tie for 5th are the teams of Frank Shannon and Wilfred Pilgrim of Kingswood Park; Jack Cunningham of the Fredericton Golf Club and Doug MacAfee of the Sussex Golf and Curling Club; Ray Smith of the Country Meadows Golf Club and Jim Cliff of the Moncton Golf Club; and Pat McGuire and Frank Doyle of the Hampton Golf Club.

Leading the second division’s gross competition is the team of Jacques Bosse of the Grand Falls Golf Club and Gaetan Bosse of the Edmundston Fraser Golf Club after their round of 71 on Wednesday. Not far behind are the pairings at +3, consisting of Rod Aube and Brian Smith of Kingswood Park; Phillip Mix and Glen Bolivar of the Country Meadows Golf Club; and finally Brian Sleath and Jim London of the Hampton Golf Club. In the second division’s net competition, Allan Craig and Malcolm White share the lead with Les Mott and his partner Bob Tilley.

Play is set to resume Thursday morning at 7:30, with the gross leaders teeing off in the final pairing at 1:00PM. For a complete list of results and Thursday tee times, please visit: www.nbga.nb.ca.
