South Wins 3rd Straight Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza Estabrooks Cup
It’s been a long time coming but the South once again has more Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza Estabrooks Cup wins than the North. The South put the finishing touches on their 3rd straight win at Edmundston earlier today, finishing off the North 15 to 9. It was the 2nd straight year where the South won big and the 5th time in 6 years that the South side has won. This leaves the South with 6 wins overall, one more than the North’s 5 wins.
In the first match of the morning, Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza Estabrooks Cup veteran Darren Ritchie put an exclamation mark on his choice as a captain’s pick. Ritchie picked up his 3rd point of the weekend when he defeated North’s Sean Kee 3&2. South made it two straight to start the morning when Kevin Farmer posted a 1UP victory over North’s Herrick Hansen. South grabbed their 3rd point in a row when Dave Freeman finished off the host club’s Alain Plourde of the North 4&2.
North finally responded when Wilf Pilgrim, playing in his 2nd Estabrooks Cup, defeated Estabrooks Cup rookie Jamie Thibault 5&4. South earned their 4th point of the morning when Jason Snow defeated North’s Wade Girdwood 3&2. The 5th match of the day, featuring North’s Jamie Arbeau and South’s Greg Jones did little to separate the teams as the two Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza veterans finished All Square. South veteran Ken Comeau brought his side to the brink of victory by besting North’s James Sanford 3&1 and when South’s Jason Roach completed his perfect 3-0 weekend by defeating North’s Michel Landry 4&3, the South had their 3rd straight win.
In the remaining matches, South’s Dale Kinnie defeated North’s Adam Atkinson 2&1, North’s Tony MacKinnon defeated South’s Drew McCafferty 2&1, South’s Jason Roach posted a 4&3 victory over North’s Michel Landry, North’s Darren MacPherson and South’s Ed Reevey finished All Square and South’s Scott Weatherhead defeated North’s Gary Melanson 1UP.
South Captain Wynn Meldrum summed up the weekend by saying, “even though the South won, there can be no losers when as many athletes and gentlemen get together to play the game they all love.” North Captain John Townsend was gracious in defeat, saying, “While I’m disappointed the North lost, I was very happy to be a part of this celebration of golf and most importantly, this celebration of Mel Murray. And though it cost us, I was very happy to see Darren Ritchie earn three points, as a tribute to his good friend Mel.”
The Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza Estabrooks Cup is a Ryder Cup style format that pits the top golfers of the North against the top golfers of the South in a battle for New Brunswick’s golf dominance. Twelve player teams are selected for both the North and South to compete in a two-day tournament containing fourball matches, foursome matches and singles matches. The first ten positions on each team are filled on the basis of final point standings in the Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza Player of Year Challenge. The final two spots on each team are reserved as captains’ picks.
In pursuing their mission of “helping make the good times better”, Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza has become one of Canada’s largest and most successful pizza chains, with hundreds of thousands of satisfied customers. With one location in Fredericton, 30 in British Columbia, 17 in Singapore and one other in Indonesia, Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza is a growing international corporation continually attracting customers and entering new markets. “Nothing brings people together in quite the same way as sharing pizza.”
