North and South Deadlocked at Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza Estabrooks Cup

With the 1st day of the Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza Estabrooks Cup now in the books, the North and the South finds themselves no closer to knowing who will win the cup, sitting deadlocked at 6-6. North had the upper-hand in the morning Fourball (bestball) matches but South responded in the afternoon Foursome (alternate shot) matches, leaving the teams tied heading into Sunday’s singles matches.

The North got off to the start they wanted, building a 4-2 lead by the end of morning Fourball action. Veteran Tony MacKinnon and his Fredericton clubmate James Sanford grabbed the first points of the day with a 3&2 win over South’s Ken Comeau and Drew McCafferty, both of Moncton. South answered back immediately when captain’s pick Darren Ritchie (Hampton) and Jason Roach (Riverside) defeated North’s Alain Plourde (Edmundston) and Michel Landry (Kingswood) 2UP. Things stayed tied when North’s Wilf Pilgrim (Kingswood) and Darren MacPherson (Restigouche) finished all square with South’s David Freeman (Petitcodiac) and Jamie Thibault (Moncton). North moved ahead when captain’s pick Herrick Hansen (Aroostook) and Sean Kee (Covered Bridge) earned a 2UP victory over Kevin Farmer (Herring Cove) and Scott Weatherhead (Westfield). North’s Jamie Arbeau (Fredericton) and Wade Girdwood (Covered Bridge) ended all square with Jason Snow (Hampton) and Ed Reevey (Riverside). In the last match of the day, North grabbed their 4th point when Gary Melanson (Covered Bridge) and Adam Atkinson (Fredericton) won 4&3 against Greg Jones (Country Meadows) and Dale Kinnie (Moncton).

In the first match of the afternoon, South’s Ken Comeau and Drew McCafferty rebounded from a morning loss to beat North’s Atkinson and Sanford 2&1. South kept Darren Ritchie and Jason Roach together for the afternoon match and it definitely paid off as they beat up on North’s MacKinnon and Kee, winning 6&5. South claimed their 3rd straight foursome win when Kevin Farmer and Scott Weatherhead posted a 3&2 victory over the North team of Girdwood and Melanson. North finally stopped the bleeding in the 4th match of the afternoon when Edmundston’s Alain Plourde and Darren MacPherson defeated the South team of Thibault and Freeman 1UP. North claimed their 2nd straight afternoon match when Michel Landry and Jamie Arbeau defeated Reevey and Snow 1UP. In the final match, South’s Greg Jones and Dale Kinnie put the finishing touches on a big South afternoon, handing North’s Hansen and Pilgrim a 2&1 defeat.

Heading into Sunday’s singles matches, 12 points are still up for grabs.  As defending champions, the South needs only 12 total points to retain the Cup while the North need 12.5 points for victory. With both teams within striking distance, there promises to be much intrigue on Sunday.

The Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza Estabrooks Cup is a Ryder Cup style format that pits the top golfers of the North against the top golfers of the South in a battle for New Brunswick’s golf dominance. Twelve player teams are selected for both the North and South to compete in a two-day tournament containing fourball matches, foursome matches and singles matches. The first ten positions on each team are filled on the basis of final point standings in the Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza Player of Year Challenge. The final two spots on each team are reserved as captains’ picks.

Players on both sides have been wearing black ribbons to honour Fredericton’s Mel Murray, who passed away recently after a two year battle with cancer. Murray was a fixture on the North team, playing in every Estabrooks Cup until missing his 1st one in 2007. Play concludes Sunday with the Singles matches beginning at 8:30AM. The Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza Estabrooks Cup will be awarded to the winning team at the end of Sunday’s play.

The Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza Estabrooks Cup is named after John Estabrooks of the Moncton Golf & Country Club. Mr. Estabrooks is a former NBGA President who served the NBGA for many years as a volunteer. In 2003, John was inducted into the NB Sports Hall of Fame for his contributions to golf.

In pursuing their mission of “helping make the good times better”, Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza has become one of Canada’s largest and most successful pizza chains, with hundreds of thousands of satisfied customers. With one location in Fredericton, 30 in British Columbia, 17 in Singapore and one other in Indonesia, Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza is a growing international corporation continually attracting customers and entering new markets. “Nothing brings people together in quite the same way as sharing pizza.”
