Gilbert, Charbonneau & Whelan Claim East Coast Junior Titles
For immediate release (Bouctouche, NB): The second round of the East Coast Junior Championship, Sponsored by the Town of Bouctouche and the Chamber of Commerce, got underway at 7:00am this morning. The leaders finished teeing off at 1:19pm from the first tee. The weather cooperated enough to prevent any potential weather delays, even though players began under rain and windy conditions.
Quebec native, Max Gilbert bounced back to take the title of East Coast Junior Champion from Stephane Boudreau of Fox Creek. Gilbert finished with a 68 after Round 1 to hold 2nd place, but came out to play today as he fired a 73 (+1) to tie for the overall lead at -3 (141) and force a playoff with Boudreau. Boudreau shot a 74 in the 2nd round to finish tied with Gilbert. After a 3 hole aggregate playoff, Gilbert was declared the winner by making birdie on the first playoff hole, then making par at the second playoff hole, and par on the final playoff hole. Boudreau made par at the first two playoff holes, but then double bogeyed the final hole.
Charlie Martin of Fredericton finished 1 shot behind the leaders at -2 (142) to hold 3rd place. There was a 4 way tie for 4th spot with Maxime Viens, Jean-Sebastien Bonin, Raoul Menard (all from Quebec) & Mark Canfield of Nova Scotia with a +4 (148).
Anouk Charbonneau of Quebec fought off Sarah-Andrea Landry also from Quebec to take the female division championship by one shot with a +7 (151). Landry finished the two day event at +8 (152), followed by Katie White of PEI +11 (155). New Brunswick’s top female players were Jennifer Armstrong of Riverside & Bobbi Wilson of Gage. Both Wilson & Armstrong finished at +19 (163), tied for fifth.
The midget division also saw strong competition during the second round of play. Jonathan Whelan of Riverside fired an 80 to finished the 36 hole tournament at +17 (161). Finishing in 2nd was Brodie Ward of PEI at +18 (162), and Brett Wilson of Sussex who finished in 3rd with a 171.
This year marks the tenth year for the East Coast Junior Championship (and the ninth consecutive year Bouctouche has hosted the tournament). This event was created with the objective to attract competitive junior aged golfers from the East Coast of North America to compete in a two-day championship tournament. The results of this event also count for Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) Future Links Order of Merit Points.
