For immediate release (Bouctouche, NB): The first round of the East Coast Junior Championship – sponsored by the Town of Bouctouche & the Bouctouche Chamber of Commerce, got underway at 7:00am this morning. The early start was necessary to accommodate the largest field of players that the event has ever seen.

Mild temperatures with periods of rainshowers had no effects on the players’ scores as they completed the first round at the Bouctouche Golf Club. The field consists of players from Eastern Canada; including Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. During the first round of play on the par 72 course, 4 of the 144 player field recorded sub-par rounds.

Stephane Boudreau of Fox Creek made history as he fired the lowest recorded round at the East Coast Junior Championship. Boudreau ended the first round at -5 (67) to take a one shot lead over Max Gilbert of Quebec, and a two shot lead over Charlie Martin of Fredericton.

Boudreau made birdies on holes 1, 5, 6, 13, 14, 15, and only one bogey on the 18th hole. Gilbert (Quebec) made 6 birdies & 2 bogeys to finish at -4 (68). Martin (Fredericton) made 5 birdies on the front nine and 2 bogeys on the back nine for a -3 (69).  Boudreau will be the player to beat tomorrow as he will be leading the final pairing of the day which will begin at 1:19pm.

On the girls’ side, Sarah-Andrea Landry and Anouk Charbonneau of Quebec & Katie White of PEI share the lead after 18 holes. Landry, Charbonneau & White fired a +1 (73) while finishing under inclement weather. Laurence Mignault of Quebec sits alone in 4th at +2 (74).  Jennifer Armstrong of Riverside recorded the best score among New Brunswick females with a +8 (80). The leaders within the female division will tee off at 12:52pm.

This year’s tournament continued to accommodate the younger aged players by having a midget division. Jonathan Whelan of Riverside holds a 2 shot lead after firing a +9 (81). J.J. Allison of Restigouche holds 2nd place with a +11 (83) followed by Brett Wilson of Sussex with a +12 (84).

This year marks the tenth year for the East Coast Junior Championship (and the ninth consecutive year Bouctouche has hosted the tournament). This event was created with the objective to attract competitive junior aged golfers from the East Coast of North America to compete in a two-day championship tournament. The results of this event also count for Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) Future Links Order of Merit Points. The second and final day of play will resume tomorrow (June 27th) at 7:00am with the leaders teeing off at 1:19pm.
