2008 Cavendish/Lounsbury, NB Bantam/Midget Championship
The first day of the Bantam / Midget Championship took place today at the Magnetic Hill Golf Club under sunny skies & warm temperatures. The event, which is a 36 hole championship, will name the Bantam and Midget Champions for both the boys and the girls. The field consisted of 55 players, 47 boys and 8 girls.
On the boys side, the top 15 competitors and ties will earn the right to compete in the Austin Drisdelle Realty NB Junior/Juvenile Championship at the Fredericton Golf & Curling Club on July 14th – 17th. The midget champion will automatically be named to represent the NBGA at the Atlantic Team Championships. The remaining 3 spots on the Midget Team, and the alternate spot, will be selected from the top three Midget players after the 2 rounds of the Midget/Bantam and the first two rounds of the Junior/Juvenile Championships.
Jonathan Whelan of Riverside leads the Midget Boys Division after firing a +4 (74) today. Whelan now holds a one shot lead going into the 2nd and final round of play. Whelan made the turn at +4 (38) and finished the back nine at +1 (36). Defending Champion, Kyle Blacquier of Kingswood sits one shot back of Whelan at +5 (75) & holds second place in the Midget Division. Blacquier will be paired with Whelan in the final round as they compete for the title. Holding the 3rd position is Brett Wilson of Sussex who is only 2 shots behind Whelan. Wilson finished the first round at +6 (76).
Calvin Ross of Kingswood leads the Bantam Boys Division. Ross finished the first day at +18 (88). Jonathan Carroll & Danek Hadley, both from Gowan Brae share 2nd place with an 18-hole score of 93.
For the midget girls, Morgan Matchett of Miramichi holds a 2 shot lead over Jillian Ferguson of Gowan Brae. Matchett finished the first round with an 89 (+19). Ferguson shot a 91 (+21) to complete her day.

Please note, a bantam golfer is eligible if they have not reached their twelfth (12) birthday by August 10th(boys) and 11th(girls). While a midget golfer is eligible if they have not reached their fifteenth (15) birthday by August 10th(boys) and 11th(girls).
