David Williamson wins 2008 RBC Dominion Securities NB Amateur Championship
The 2008 RBC Dominion Securities NB Men’s Amateur Championship at the Mactaquac Provincial Park Golf Course has come to a conclusion with Nova Scotia’s David Williamson winning the tournament by a 5 stroke margin. Williamson fired a 1 under par 71 on Sunday, leaving him at 11 under par for the tournament, which was good enough to lock up the championship.
Williamson, of the Ashburn Golf Club in Halifax, NS, was 37 on his front nine with a birdie on the 7th hole along with two bogies on 2 & 8. After a par on 10, he had a birdie on 11, 14 & 15 and ended his round with a bogey on 18 for a 34 on the back and a 5 shot victory. Williamson has been playing some great golf in the month of July and has demonstrated this with wins at both the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia amateur championships. Williamson had a playoff win in early July at the Nova Scotia Amateur and continued his strong play into this week, dominating the field by shooting under par in all four rounds, making him the only player to do so.
Bill Seagris of Amherstburg, Ontario finished in 2nd place in the championship for the 2nd straight year after shooting 71 on Sunday, giving Seagris a 4-day total of 248. Seagris was 1 over par on the front nine and went 2 under par on the back. Seagris has won the Barrett Amateur Championship the past two and is returning to the Barrett, August 2nd-4th where he will be looking to defend his title.
Tom Keddy from the Hillsborough Golf Course was the lowest New Brunswick resident this week finishing 3rd. Keddy, of the Hillsborough Golf Club, shot 71 on Sunday, giving him a –4 total for the tournament. He had an up-and-down front nine with 3 birdies on 1, 6, & 9 and also bogies on 4, 5, and 8 to finish at even par on the front. On the back nine, Keddy finished at –1 with birdies on 11, & 15. Keddy got off to a slow start to the tournament after shooting 74 on Thursday, but followed it up by consistently shooting under par in his following 3 rounds. Keddy will be leading the NB Team to the Canadian Amateur Championship in Lethbridge, Alberta in mid-August.
Finishing 4th was Michel Landry of Kingswood Park after shooting Sunday’s lowest round with a 69. Work commitments, however, will not allow Landry to make the trip to Nationals as part of Team NB. Mathieu Gingras of the Moncton Golf Course earned the second spot on Team NB after firing 74 in the final round for a 291, +3 total. The final two spots on Team NB will be filled by Eric Coffin of the Fredericton Golf Course and Jean Mainville of the Fox Creek Golf Club; both players finished at a six over par, 294. The Alternate on the team will be Jason Roach of the Riverside Country Club, whom will also be traveling to the Canadian Amateur Championship.
The Paradise Canyon Golf Resort in Lethbridge, Alberta, is home to the 2008 Canadian Amateur Championship. Beyond the 4-player NB Team, New Brunswick is entitled to three additional quota spots for a total of seven spots at the Canadian Amateur, set for August 10th-14th. Earning the three additional spots are Roach, Ed Reevey of the Riverside Country Club and Bob Brown of the Fredericton Golf Club
