Drane wins third straight Royale NB Amateur Championship
Angela Drane of the Avondale Country Club, PEI won in dramatic playoff fashion on Saturday to clinch her third consecutive Royale NB Amateur Championship. Kristi Vienneau of the Fredericton Golf Club shot 74 in her final round to make up the 1-shot margin on Drane to force the championship to a three hole playoff. After being tied after three playoff holes, Drane had a tap in birdie on the first sudden death playoff hole for the victory. Drane was 75 on Sunday with a birdie on the 18th hole to force the playoff with Vienneau who was already in with a 74. Finishing alone in 3rd place was Morgan Bell of the Belvedere Golf and Country Club, PEI.
Drane was 39 on the front nine with three bogeys while shooting an even par 36 on the back with birdies on 15 & 18 and a double bogey on 11. Vienneau will be leading Team NB to the Royale Canadian Ladies Championship in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The other three members of the amateur team will be Margo McLeod of the Covered Bridge Golf Club (+13), Leanne Richardson of the Country Meadows Golf Club (+14), and Susan Sullivan of the Country Meadows Golf Club (+20).
Kathy Grebenc of the Gowan Brae Golf Club shot a 78 in her final round to win the Royale NB Senior Provincial Championship. Grebenc won the championship by a 5 shot margin over the second place finisher, Catherine Burgess of the Riverside Country Club. This was Grebenc’s first year playing in the senior category but unfortunately she will not be able to attend the Royale Canadian Senior Ladies Championship in Newfoundland from August 25-28. Team NB will consist of Catherine Burgess, Penny Dickeson from the Fredericton Golf Club, Brenda Parrott from the Gowan Brae Golf Club, and Marlene Steeves of Kingswood Park.
Grebanc played a solid round of golf on Saturday going 38 on the front and 40 on the back nine with 12 pars and 6 bogeys over her 18 holes. Over her three rounds she managed to go 75-79-78 for a +16, 232 total. Burgess was 40 on the front nine and 79 on the back with a birdie on the second hole. Penny Dickeson had a birdie on the 13th hole and finished her tournament at 22 over par, only six shots off the lead. Taking the 3rd team spot was Marlene Steeves who finished at 244 +28 for the championship. Brenda Parrott had birdies on the 3rd and 6th holes and finished her final round at 79 for a +32, 248 total. Tied with Parrott for the final spot on the team was Sue Seaborn of the Sackville Golf and Country Club who also finished at +32; a playoff for the spot would have usually followed the round but Seaborn decided that she will not be able to travel with the NB team.
Marlene Steeves won her 2nd straight Royale NB Super Senior Provincial Championship on Saturday after winning the age bracket by a staggering 22 strokes. Steeves was 79-82-83 over her three days at the Country Meadows Golf Club and she is the only Super Senior that will be traveling with the Senior NB Team to Newfoundland for the national championship. In second place was Marie Anne Leger of the Country Meadows Golf club after finishing the tournament at +50. Louise Watling of the Gowan Brae Golf Club was not far behind Leger, finishing at a +53, 269.
