Drane leads Royale Championship going into final round on Saturday
 
Angela Drane of the Avondale Country Club, PEI shot an even par 72 on Friday to snatch the lead away from Kristi Vienneau of the Fredericton Golf Club at the Royale NB Ladies Provincial Championship. Drane has a 1-shot lead over Vienneau and a 4-shot lead over Morgan Bell of the Belvedere Golf and Country Club, PEI. Drane, Vienneau, and Bell will consist of the final pair on Saturday where they will be teeing off at 1:00 pm.
 
Drane began her round with 4 pars on the first 4 holes and she had a birdie on the 5th. Her luck quickly changed as she had a double-bogey on 6 and a bogey on 7, giving her 38 on the front nine. Drane quickly fired back with birdies on 10 & 12 and finished her final six holes with straight pars, giving her an even par round of 72. Drane plays golf at the University of Louisiana at Monroe and she has won the Royale NB Ladies Amateur Championship the past two consecutive years, hoping that 2008 will be her third.
 
Only one shot off the lead, Kristi Vienneau was 38 on both the front and back nine at the Country Meadows Golf Club on Friday. She started her round off well with a birdie on the first hole but gave it back with a bogey on 3 and a double-bogey on 4. After a bogey on 8, Vienneau had a birdie on 9. Vienneau had three more birdies on her round on holes 12, 13, & 15, had bogeys on 11, 14, and 16, and had another double bogey on 17. Sitting in third place and four shots off the lead is Morgan Bell after her stellar round of 74 on Friday. In a three-way tie for fourth place are Margo McLeod of the Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club, Debi Decoste of Granite Springs Golf Club (NS), and Leanne Richardson of the Country Meadows Golf Club, all sitting at +11.
 
In the Senior category, Kathy Grebenc of the Gowan Brae Golf Club increased her lead on Friday with a solid round of 79, giving her a 4 shot lead over Catherine Burgess of the Riverside Country Club. Grebenc was 39 on the front nine and 40 on the back. Penny Dickeson of the Fredericton Golf and Country Club fired her second round of 80 and is sitting in third place. Monique Taylor of the Moncton Golf Club is sitting in fourth place after her round of 84, which included a hole-in-one on the par 3 tenth hole. The top four amateurs and the top four seniors will each be competing in the national championships later in the season.
 
In the Super-Senior category, Marlene Steeves of Kingswood Park has a commanding 13 shot lead over her nearest competitor. Steeves was 82 on Friday to follow up her 79 in the first round. Marie Anne Leger of the Country Meadows Golf Club is alone in second place after she shot 92, giving her a total of 174 after two rounds of play.
 
In the Senior category’s second division, Vivian Lynn Jenkins of the Fox Creek Golf Club has a 2-shot lead with a 182 total. Not far behind Jenkins is Marilyn Pollock of the Petitcodiac Valley Golf and Country Club, sitting at 184. In the Senior’s third division, Marcelle Kervin of the Country Meadows Golf Club and Grace Wilson of the Hillsborough Golf Club remain in a tie after they both shot 96 & 99 over the first two rounds.
 
In the Amateur Category’s second division, Pam Cossey of the Rockwood Park Golf Club is sitting at 165 and she has a 3-shot lead over Angela Welch of the Woodstock Golf & Curling Club. Doreen Vienneau or the Pine Needles Golf & Country Club is leading the Amateur Category’s third division, sitting at 172. She has a 5-shot lead over her nearest competitor, Susan Godin of the Country Meadows Golf Club.
 
The 2008 Royale Cup National Women’s Amateur Championship is being held at the Elmhurst Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba from July 28th to August 1st. New Brunswick will be sending 4 female amateur players to this national championship. The Bally Haly Golf & Curling Club in St. John’s, Newfoundland will be hosting the Royale National Women’s Senior Championship from August 25th- 28th. Like the amateur team, New Brunswick is sending 4 senior women to this event.
 
 The third round of play is set to begin Saturday morning at 7:30am. For a complete list of results and Saturday tee times, please visit: www.nbga.nb.ca. This event will be a 54 hole stroke play tournament played over three days. In each championship, there will be 3 divisions with both net and gross prizes being awarded.
 
The New Brunswick Golf Association, a not for profit organization founded in 1934, is the official governing body for amateur golf in New Brunswick. In January of 2006, the NBGA officially merged with the New Brunswick Ladies Golf Association (NBLGA), resulting in one united governing body for amateur golf in the province. Programs offered by the NBGA to its 15,000 members include: 18 provincial championships, rules of golf education, course rating and handicap services, junior golf development programs and member club marketing initiatives.
